About NY Tritons Multisport

About us    Team History    Our coaches

The Tritons are always excited to welcome new members, and are also very proud that many of the original team are still active participants in the life of the organization. Our athletes encourage and support each other to take on new challenges, from their first race to long distance triathlons and adventure racing. (Take a look at our Race Reports page for some of their inspiring stories.)

From autumn 1998 until autumn 2009 the group was an official committee of Front Runners New York. Today, New York Tritons Multisport is an independent organization dedicated to serving LGBT triathletes in the NYC tri-state area and beyond. (For more specific information, please see our Mission Statement.)

The group started as Team New York Triathlon in 1997, when newbie triathlete Claudia Cummings contacted Fast & Fabulous Cycling founder Bob Nelson to ask, “Who’s organizing the triathletes for the Gay Games in Amsterdam next year?” Bob replied, “You are, honey.”

1998 Gay Games IV

Team New York Triathlon sent 25 members to Amsterdam, and had so much fun training and racing together that they decided to stick together after the Games were over. After several years the team decided that it was time for a new name and look, and became the New York Tritons in 2002.

Gay Games Sydney

Team members have participated in the Gay Games from 1998 to the present time (including several planning to compete in Cologne in 2010), and in races of all distances around the world from Central Park to Kona, Hawaii. Keep an eye out for our eye-catching new uniforms at a race near you!
