Training with the Tritons

Swim

Join us for twice-weekly swim workouts on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 pm at the Sportspark pool on Roosevelt Island.

The workouts are set up as a build/recovery program with increasing intensity as the months progress from base training to race specific training, similar to the way many plan their running and biking programs.

While we will always focus on improving your technique to achieve better balance and comfort in the water, we are also adding some new features to the swim program this year. The swim workouts will have a monthly cycle that is designed to build your endurance, strength and speed and get you ready for the upcoming triathlon season.

This cycle is designed to give you the most benefit if you participate on a regular basis, and will build over the winter and spring to get you swimming longer, faster. That being said, members can also participate as their schedules allow, so don't let this new format stop you from coming to the pool. For more details, see our swim page.

Our goal is to turn the swim portion of a triathlon from something you can't wait to finish, to an integral part of your race that you can't wait to dive into!

Bike

Outdoor cycle training is currently on hiatus due to unfavorable cycling conditions (cold temperatures, snow, and rain cancel our rides). Weekday rides will resume in April at the following places and times:

Central Park: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 am; meet at the 110th Street entrance at Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. Generally speaking, Tuesday mornings are recovery pace rides and Thursdays are higher intensity including hill repeats and high-cadence sprinting. Ride contact is Les Jones.

Prospect Park: Tuesdays (and occasional Fridays) at 5:45 am; meet at the 3rd Street entrance. Generally speaking, Tuesday mornings are often recovery rides, but this varies; please check our list serv for details. Ride contact is Claudia Cummings.

All levels of rider are welcome at Tritons workouts. Helmets are always required for Tritons rides – no helmet, no ride. We also recommend bringing a spare tube and pump, water, snacks and a metrocard. If it is dark when you are beginning or ending your ride, please also consider using lights on your bike and wearing light-colored and/or reflective clothing for greater visibilty.

For special events, check our calendar page often!

Run

Group runs offer an enjoyable social environment and pace support for runners of all abilities. At the current time, we are hard at work creating a regular group run schedule that accommodates the busy training plans of our members. For details, please check our calendar page, contact us, or check in on the Tritons list serv.

You may also consider run workouts with Front Runners New York. FRNY offers fun runs in Central Park on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM and Saturday mornings at 10:00 AM. For details and a map to the meeting points, check out their web page.
